Entrevista exclusiva con Kyle Hill, héroe del último ascenso del Lucentum

 

El próximo viernes se cumplirá el cuarto aniversario del último ascenso del Lucentum en aquella Final a Cuatro de Fuenlabrada. Aquellos partidos tuvieron un protagonista absoluto, Kyle Hill. Sus triples fueron decisivos y nos dieron el ascenso. He podido contactar con él y nos ha contestado amablemente unas preguntas para el blog.

Nos habla de aquellos momentos mágicos, de sus compañeros, de los motivos de su mal año en ACB, de Guillermo Rejón y de los buenos recuerdos que guarda de Alicante.

How do you remember your time in Alicante? And what about Lucentum fans?

I remember my time in Alicante as a wonderful time! The city, the weather and site of Alicante is imprinted in my brain and was very beautiful! 

The fans were excellent and was the best treatment I could ask for and I thank them.

We remember you as a hero. Your 3-pointer at the Final Four against Melilla (final) and against Los Barrios (semifinal) are still in our memories. How do you remember those games? 

Those games in the Semifinals and Finals were apart of my biggest accomplishments and just remember that team of great guys that enjoyed being together as well as playing together. Everything I went through that year is something I will never forget. 

How do you remember that celebration with your teammates? Do you keep any anecdote of those moments?

Oh the celebration was great after the final time ticked off in that game I ran around hugging all the guys on the team and just a relief that we were able to accomplish all we did. I was thanking Oscar for the opportunity and the trust he had in me. Also that my father was there to witness this as well as my agent and friend Quique Villalobos was there and we shared a big hug while he told me he was proud of me!

I just know after winning and finding out I had a broken rib during that final and still able to do things I did was something I can never forget. 

Next season, in ACB, you didn’t have a good season and you had to leave Lucentum. How did you feel that season? Which were the reasons why you had that bad season?

The next season in the ACB was totally different as I didn't have the same responsibility as I did the year before.  Also we had new guys on the team that they wanted to give more time and more plays to put me in a bad position. But in life things change and you can never expect things to be the same. 

These days, Lucentum is fighting for another promotion to ACB, Guillermo Rejon is again in our team and has just beaten the record for games played with Lucentum (200). How do you remember Guillermo?

Guillermo was the heart and soul of our team that year as well as El Capitan! He was everything and more a captain is supposed to be and is no surprise he is again in that position. He is a leader, hard worker, dedicated and just all around great person. If I had to go to war he is the person I want on my side!  

Do you usually follow Spanish basketball?

I still follow Spanish league but not as much as before since I was not able to secure a team this year but last year was good as I was with Ourense and helped them advance. 

What are you doing nowadays? Are you still playing? Something related to basketball?

Now I am working out daily waiting on an opportunity to play again but also working as a machine operator with Uhaul company and finishing my degree. Also some coaching and helping young players develop their game. 

I just want to thank you and lucentum for the great times and memories that will stay with me all my life. And wish this team, and my guy Taylor, good luck this year!

¿Cómo recuerdas tu etapa en Alicante? ¿Y a la afición del Lucentum?

Recuerdo mi paso por el Lucentum como una época maravillosa. La ciudad, el clima y la gente de Alicante dejó huella en mis recuerdos y fue muy bonita.

La afición fue excelente y recibí el mejor trato que se puede pedir, y lo se lo agradezco.

Te recordamos como un héroe. Tus triples en la Final a Cuatro contra Melilla y Los Barrios siguen en nuestros recuerdos. ¿Cómo recuerdas tú aquellos partidos?

Aquellos encuentros de semifinales y final fueron unos de mis mayores logros y recuerdo que éramos un equipo de grandes tipos que disfrutaban estando juntos y también jugando juntos. Todo lo que viví ese año es algo que nunca olvidaré.

¿Cómo recuerdas la celebración con tus compañeros? ¿Guardas alguna anécdota de aquellos momentos?

La celebración fue enorme cuando se acabó el partido. Corrí por toda la cancha abrazando a todos los compañeros y satisfechos de haber sido capaces de conseguir aquel éxito. Le daba las gracias a Óscar (Quintana) por la confianza que tuvo en mi. Mi padre también estuvo allí y fue testigo del ascenso, al igual que mi agente y amigo, Quique Villalobos, con el que compartí un gran abrazo mientras me decía lo orgulloso que estaba de mi.

Después de la victoria descubrí que me rompí una costilla durante la final y pensar que, a pesar de ello, fui capaz de hacer lo que hice es algo que nunca olvidaré.

La siguiente temporada, en ACB, no tuviste una buena temporada y tuviste que dejar el Lucentum. ¿Cómo te sentiste aquella temporada? ¿Cuáles crees que fueron las razones por las que tuviste tan mal año?

La temporada en ACB fue totalmente diferente y no tenía la misma responsabilidad que tuve el año anterior. Además, teníamos nuevos chicos en el equipo que querían tener más minutos y más jugadas para dejarme en mal lugar. Pero en la vida las cosas cambian y nunca puedes esperar que todo siga igual.

En estos días el Lucentum está luchando por volver a ascender a ACB. Guillermo Rejón está de nuevo en nuestro equipo y además, acaba de batir el record de partidos con la camiseta del Lucentum (200). ¿Cómo recuerdas a Guillermo?

Guillermo fue el corazón y el alma de nuestro equipo aquel año como “El Capitán”! El era todo y más de lo que se puede esperar de un capitán. No me sorprende que vuelva a estar en el equipo. Es un líder, un trabajador nato, y además una gran persona. Si tuviera que ir a una guerra es la persona que querría tener a mi lado. 

¿Sigues habitualmente el basket español?

Todavía sigo la liga española, aunque no tanto desde que no pude conseguir equipo esta temporada, pero el pasado año fue bueno, estuve en Ourense y pude ayudarles a ascender.

¿A qué te dedicas ahora? ¿Sigues jugando? ¿Algo relacionado con el baloncesto?

Ahora sigo trabajando diariamente esperando una oportunidad para jugar pero también trabajando como operario en Uhaul, además de terminar mis estudios. También entreno y ayudo a jóvenes jugadores a mejorar su juego. 

Quiero agradecerte a ti y al Lucentum aquellos grandes recuerdos y momentos que siempre llevaré conmigo el resto de mi vida. Y deseo al equipo y a mi colega Taylor, buena suerte este año!
